Caring for Old Trees Workshop

The old trees in our neighborhoods hold stories of the generations before us. They are part of the culture and fabric of our streets and parks. Their tall canopies provide shade and keep our communities cooler during the hot summer days. Their branches provide homes for birds and places for squirrels to play. Their leaves, flowers, fruits, and nuts provide food for our insects and wildlife. They clean our air and give us oxygen to breathe.

Join Find Your Nature, Richmond Tree Stewards, and Janine Lester, Certified Arborist to learn about the benefits of old trees, threats to them, and how we can care for them.

Space is limited to 30 people. Event is free, but $5-10 donations are encouraged!

9:30-10:45 Morning Workshop at North Avenue Library, 2901 North Avenue, Richmond, VA

• Arrival and Registration
• Welcome and Introductions with Amber Ellis of Find Your Nature
• Presentation by Janine Lester, Certified Arborist: Benefits of Old Trees (wildlife, culture/heritage, air quality, shade, etc.), popular species of old trees and their lifespan, and threats facing our old trees
• Questions and Discussion

11:00-12:00 Hand On Learning at Richmond Community High School Garden, 2901 Woodrow Ave, Richmond, VA 

• Learn about English Ivy, an invasive species, and how to safely remove Ivy off trees
• Visit some old trees to better understand how to care for canopy/dead limbs and recognize signs and myths about health decline

12:00-12:30 Lunch on Your Own

• Feel free to bring a bag lunch to enjoy with others! Drinks will be provided.
